What is Social Communication Disorder?

Social Communication Disorder presents with persistent difficulties in the use of verbal and nonverbal communication. These difficulties include deficits in using communication for social purposes, such as greeting and sharing information, difficulties following rules for conversation and storytelling, impairment in the ability to change communication to match the context or the needs of the listener, and difficulties understanding what is not explicitly stated (e.g, idiom, humor, metaphors). The deficits result in limitations in effective communication, social participation, social relationships, academic achievement, or occupational performance.
